John Bidoglio has been an IAM member since 1989 and brings more than three decades of airline industry experience and union leadership to the Forward Together slate. His aviation career includes experience with American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Atlantic Aviation, and Air Wisconsin, with his primary career at US Airways and American Airlines as a Utility, Aircraft Mechanic, and Inspector. His technical background and years on the frontline have given him a deep understanding of the work our members perform and the importance of strong representation, safety, and contract enforcement.
John’s commitment to the IAM has been demonstrated through decades of service at both the Local and District levels. His union experience includes serving as a Shop Steward, Local Lodge Conductor, Local Lodge Vice President, Local Lodge Educator, Ground Safety Committee member, and Flight Safety Committee member. At the District level, he has served as an Educator, Flight Safety Committee member, Trustee, and District Vice President for American Airlines. Through each of these positions, John has remained focused on educating members, protecting their rights, promoting workplace safety, and ensuring that the Union remains connected to the people it represents.
One of the most significant moments in John’s union career came on January 15, 2009, when he assisted with the National Transportation Safety Board investigation of US Airways Flight 1549, known as the “Miracle on the Hudson.” Representing the interests of IAM members during the investigation, John was assigned to the Structures Committee and worked alongside the NTSB investigation team. He credits the training provided by the IAM and the leadership and mentors who prepared him for that responsibility. For John, the experience reinforced a philosophy that has guided his union career: put your head down, listen, and do the work.
John believes one of the most important responsibilities of union leadership is communication and education. He takes pride in being able to communicate directly with members, teach them about the history and benefits of the IAM, and explain why staying involved in the Union matters. He understands that a strong union is built by members who know their rights, understand their contracts, recognize the importance of successorship, and understand how every part of the organization works together.
His commitment to education and safety reflects his belief that knowledge is one of the most powerful tools a Union can provide its members. Whether working with a member on a workplace issue, educating a new representative, addressing safety concerns, or helping members understand the broader labor movement, John believes effective leadership starts by listening and continues through action.
John is also a family-first person who credits his wife, Leigh, of 29 years, and their two children, Megan and Jake, as the foundation that keeps him grounded. Outside of his union and aviation career, John has dedicated time to his community, including coaching youth sports and helping provide opportunities and positive guidance to the next generation. The lessons he learned from his own coaches and union mentors continue to influence the way he approaches leadership today.
