April Butler began her Southwest Airlines career at the BHM station in 1987 as a Customer Service Agent. Coming from a third-generation union family, April understood from an early age the importance of standing together and protecting the rights of working people. That foundation quickly translated into action when she began her union journey under the guidance of the local leadership at BHM and stepped forward to serve as an alternate Shop Steward.

When the opportunity came to take on a greater leadership role, April answered the call. In 1995, she became the Lead Shop Steward at BHM, beginning a commitment to union representation that would span decades. Throughout her career, April has remained dedicated to helping members understand their rights, navigate workplace issues, and receive the representation they deserve.

April has been deeply involved with IAM Local Lodge 154 in Nashville, serving as Recording Secretary while continuing her responsibilities as a Shop Steward. She made the six-hour round trip to Local Lodge meetings whenever possible because she understood that effective union leadership requires being present, staying informed, and remaining connected to the membership.

Although April briefly stepped away from her formal Shop Steward role in 2011 for personal and family reasons, her commitment to her coworkers never stopped. She continued assisting fellow agents and IAM members at BHM and other Southwest stations with grievances, contractual questions, and union information. Her fellow employees ultimately encouraged her to return, and in late 2012 and early 2013, April once again took on the role of Lead Shop Steward at BHM.

April has dedicated 26 of her 29 years as a Southwest Airlines Customer Service Agent to serving her Union. That level of commitment reflects more than experience—it reflects a lifetime of understanding that the strength of a union comes from members who are willing to step forward, learn, serve, and stand together.

Her dedication to union education and member development has continued throughout her career. Most recently, April had the opportunity to serve on the C.R.E.S.T. Trainers Exchange team, further expanding her ability to support the development and education of IAM representatives. She understands that preparing the next generation of Stewards and Union leaders is essential to maintaining a strong District 142. April’s leadership is built on service, experience, and consistency. For nearly three decades, she has remained connected to the frontline workforce and committed to making sure members have someone they can turn to. She knows the challenges that come with representing employees and understands that strong union leadership means listening to members, knowing the contract, being present in the workplace, and having the courage to advocate when it matters.

She is committed to strengthening representation, supporting our Shop Stewards, educating our membership, and ensuring that District 142 remains a union where every member has a voice.
